Approximately three weeks prior to the end of each semester, teaching assistant evaluations will be distributed to all teaching assistants. The evaluations should be handed out to the students at the end of a class/lab period, and filled out accordingly. The students must indicate, in the space provided, the laboratory name and section number (such as "EVSC 350L, section 0005"), and the teaching assistant's name. TAs should also encourage their students to fill out the comment portion, which will give a better picture of their performance and will help improve their teaching techniques in the future. The students should put the completed evaluations back into the provided envelope, which should then be turned in to the main office (preferably by a volunteer from the class, to assure the anonymity of the evaluations). Photocopies of the evaluations, as well as a summary and overall rating of the teaching assistants will be provided by the department after completion of the course and after grades have been turned in.
As a teacher at the University of Virginia, you are strongly encouraged to review your evaluations. Past experience tends to indicate that they contain useful information. Further, the TA experience is part of the learning process. Future employers may inquire about your teaching experience as well as your evaluation scores, so your teaching performance and your evaluations are not only important to the students you teach, but also to your future career.
