My research efforts focus on the understanding of atmospheric controls on pollutant uptake by vegetated ecosystems, emission of hydrocarbons from vegetation, chemistry of biogenic hydrocarbons, carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, greenhouse gas emissions from the terrestrial biosphere, and air quality. Field and laboratory investigations are conducted at scales ranging from individual leaves or soil plots (using environment- controlled gas exchange systems) to the landscape level (employing tower- or tethered balloon-based measurement systems). Field measurements are integrated with biospheric modeling systems to draw generalizations related to the controls on the atmosphere-surface trace gas exchange processes, and to examine gaseous chemical processing within the atmospheric boundary layer. My research demands close collaboration with colleagues in ecology and atmospheric chemistry. Current field investigations are conducted at several locations, including Virginia (USA), Ontario and Saskatchewan (Canada), and Brazil (South America).
