Procedure for Hiring Students as Drivers for Field Labs:

In order for students to drive for field labs:

The student must be at least 21 years of age.
The student must be an employee of the University.

1. Student drivers & TA drivers are required to fill out and sign a brief summary of their driving history called the Driving History Review Form (available from Pam Hoover).

2. Submit the driving history form/s to the faculty member of record for the class for review.  Faculty should keep the forms for one semester.

3. If the faculty member chooses to use the student as a driver, and the student is not a TA, the faculty member must email Jann (jgg3h@Virginia.edu) with the student’s name, the course number and the driving dates for the field lab/s and send the student to Jann to be set up on payroll. The student will need to bring a passport or Driver’s license and Social Security card for completion of their I-9 form.

4. You will receive an email when your student has been cleared to drive. Student drivers must bring their timesheet/s to the faculty member for their approval signature.

5. Students are generally paid $9/hr, two hour maximum per trip.  Note: TAs are already on payroll, so they are not paid additional money to drive.  The Chair reserves the right to exercise judgment on a case-by-case basis.
