Alluvial Fans on Mars

lpsc_posterGraduate student Alex Morgan and Professor Alan Howard study martian alluvial fans through a combination of data returned from robotic spacecraft, landform evolution modeling (see image at left), and field work at terrestrial analogue sites in Chile, Hawaii, and Death Valley. Their results suggest that the fans formed from snowmelt during periods of increased warming and fluvial activity, which carries significant implications for the biologic habitability of the Red Planet.
